| Scarborough Caribbean Sports Club (S.C.S.C.) was formed in 1973 as a Soccer Club and incorporated as a “corporation without share capital” in 1977. The organization grew quickly and consistently during its 29 y In a bold and successful attempt to promote a high level of sportsmanship with equal emphasis on skills and respect for a fellow participants, S.C.S.C. developed and managed the Scarborough Caribbean Friendship Soccer League which grew to 14 teams. We also promoted highly competitive house leagues in both soccer and basketball programs that ran throughout the winter months. However, in the fall of 1999, due to the new Education funding formula, introduced by the Conservative Government for all schools in the Province of Ontario, our basketball & soccer house leagues had to be cancelled because of the difficulty experienced in raising $17,000.00, to pay for the two school gyms we occupied for the season. This represented an increase of $16,500 versus the $500 we paid the previous year. In 1982, a folk dance activity was added to essentially provide an outlet for young girls and women as well as the culturally bent members of the organization. This grew into the highly acclaimed Scarborough Caribbean Youth Dance Ensemble, which has performed widely at Toronto entertainment centres, folk festivals across the province, and in the United States. In the fall of 1999, the S.C.Y.D.E. folk dancing practice sessions also had to be temporarily cancelled due to the introduction of the Conservative Government Funding formula, since they also use the Gym facilities jointly with our Basketball activities.
In 1993, in a bold new step, S.C.S.C. made an application for the creation of a non-profit housing project. After the success of the application, the venture was in progress until a change in the Provincial Government that cancelled all non-profit housing projects. In 1998, S.C.S.C. celebrated its 25th Anniversary, and looked forward to continuing its pioneering spirit in the community. S.C.S.C. plan to celebrate its 30th Anniversary with a Gala Dance in May, 2003 culminating with our Xmas Dinner and Dance in December 2003. Throughout its 30th Anniversary year, there will be activities. Since the fall of 1999, there have been no Gym activities during the winter months because of a lack of sufficient funds to pay for the Gym facilities. As a result our Club activities were confined to our Recreation Centre at 850 Tapscott Unit 42, Scarborough, where various card games, Dominoes and Table Tennis are played throughout the year, and our Caribana activities in the summer months. We also participate in two outdoor soccer programs: the youth (young boys), and the over 40 (old boys) leagues, where we are engaged in competitive soccer during the late spring, summer and early fall months. |
S.C.S.C The Next Generation |
The Next generation of S.C.S.C players joined the club in 1990. One of the club's founders Joseph John, along with Head Coach Vivian Manswell transitioned the championship Scarborough National Malvern under 18 team, which they groomed to success over the years into the S.C.S.C program. Some of which are still playing today or have moved into leading positions within this organization. In their first year, the team entered the Scarborough Multi Jurisdictional Mens Division and finished within the top three. With their success and confidence the following year S.C.S.C was promoted to the The next stop for the team was the Malvern league. We played there until 1999, where we experienced great competition from players in the local community who played at various levels such as the T and D, OSL, Semi Professional, and Professional. While there, we gave a good representation of ourselves, and were well known for our competitiveness; high level of discipline; and sportsmanship. We are currently playing in the North York Community Soccer league, and have been there for five years. During which time we have placed 2nd for three years, won the 1st division and Championship twice, including the the most recent 2004 Premiere Play off Championship. Each of the five years that we have played we have continued our tradition of sportsmanship, and discipline by obtaining the least cards throughout the entire three division league. This is something that we are very proud of and thank our coaching staff for helping us to maintain this life attribute. In the winter of 2004. S.C.S.C participated in a pilot program within the Malvern Community that allowed us gym time at Lester B. Pearson on weekends for both our membership; and those in the local community. We were proud to have our name attached as an established community outlet. We were able to run soccer sessions and had as many as 20 - 30 participants. In addition to this community venture, we were successful participants with our local
